Who Would Be Obama's Best Vice President Pick?

I have left off Republicans and Sen. Clinton from this CNN piece. Any of the others are pretty much acceptable to me--though I'm not a huge Evan Bayh fan and I think Sam Nunn is too out of practice to be a national candidate. Personally, I'd prefer someone who has already been on the national stage and who has been vetted. This would mean: Edwards, Biden, Clark, Richardson, Daschle and Dodd--in roughly that order. If I were to just go with my heart rather than being cautious I would pick either of two great new US Senators--Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, and Virginia's Jim Webb. McCaskill was Obama's best spokesperson on TV. Period. That's saying a lot. And Sen. Jim Webb has been the second most exciting new Democratic leader after Sen. Obama. Another obvious choice would be Ohio Gov, Ted Strickland, who was also in the US house.

CNN: (CNN) -- After emerging as victor in the long and and bruising contest to seize the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidential race, Barack Obama's next move is to choose a running mate...
Here is a list of possible frontrunners:

# Evan Bayh: What he lacks in charisma, the telegenic Bayh makes up for in national security credentials, having served on both armed services and intelligence committees in the Senate.

# Joseph Biden: A six-term senator who helms the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden, could offer the heavyweight foreign policy experience that Obama is often accused of lacking. But at 65 -- and seen as part of the U.S. political furniture -- he could undermine Obama's message of change...

# Wesley Clark: This former NATO commander, who failed in his bid for the 2004 presidential nomination, was seen as a staunch Hillary Clinton supporter -- a fact that could help unite the party. But the 63-year-old's tough reputation as a no-nonsense soldier is unlikely to win much backing among party activists...

# Chris Dodd: A long-serving senator with solid foreign policy credentials who was previously considered as a running mate for John Kerry's failed presidential bid in 2004, Dodd presents the same problems as Biden...

# Bill Richardson: The New Mexico governor, who identifies himself as Hispanic, could help sway the burgeoning Latino vote in addition to lending heavyweight foreign policy credentials as a former United Nations ambassador.

# Kathleen Sebelius: The two-term governor of mainly Republican Kansas, Sebelius has proven cross-party support but the rising Democratic star still lacks a national profile.

# Jim Webb: Another rising star, straight-talking Webb has already dismissed his vice-presidential prospects, but his appeal as a Vietnam veteran and successful novelist are clear. Webb's bluntness, however, led one commentator to dub him an "unguided missile."...

Other names mentioned in the running include: Former South Dakota senator Tom Daschle, North Carolina Senator John Edwards, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, former Armed Services Committee chairman Sam Nunn, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland.

Despite the pressure from Clinton, I think it is waaaay too early to decide.

Having said that, I like your choices FP and I would add one more.

Chuck Hagel. He is exactly were Obama in terms of foreign policy (not just Iraq and the need for diplomacy) could help to reinforce the message of a new kind of politics and restore the notion bi-partisan foreign policy.

Of course, he is a domestic conservative, but if agrees to stay out of that and make foreign policy his portfolio he could be a real asset. (It is what he cares most about.)

In the campaign, he could be the foreign policy attack dog to McCain's bluster. He is a real war hero who can put McCain his place. And he is tough. In the Armed Service Committee hearings, he was tougher on the administration than any Democrat on Iraq.

It will depend on where we are when it comes time to choose but if Obama needs foreign policy help and Hagel agrees to stay out the other issues, this heartland guy could be a great choice.

The biggest negative would be in eight years but, by then, Hagel would be too old to run.

Search begins in earnest.

Caroline Kennedy will be part of a three-person team leading the search for Barack Obama's vice president, said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

In addition to President John F. Kennedy's daughter, former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder and Jim Johnson, former CEO of Fannie Mae, will lead the search for a running mate, Burton said.

"Senator Obama is pleased to have three talented and dedicated individuals managing this rigorous process. He will work closely with them in the coming weeks but ultimately this will be his decision and his alone," Burton said.

I would love to see Chris Dodd but I think the Republicans would smack him with being a Norther Eastern ellitist...jeez, when did being good at something or "elite" became a bad thing?!

Jim Webb is attractive in many ways, but he has a history of making remarks that are -- at best -- insensitive to women's issues. Considering there are Hillary supporters who are convinced she was a victim of sexism in the primary campaign, Webb would not be the best choice. This is a shame, because I think he would be a big help in the Appalachian states and elsewhere.

By campaigning for the job, Hillary made it very hard for Obama to select her. From this point on he cannot be seen to be anything but the person in charge, nor having the Hillary camp dictating things to him.

Yet, if he delays a decision long enough for tempers to cool down, and if Hillary can show by her words and actions that she's not just waiting for some Trinity UCC or other eruption to destroy Obama's campaign, allowing her to claim the top spot, she might wind up the best choice after all.

I agree with sbgeorge that it's too early to decide now, and that Hegel is a very interesting person to consider.

Then, of course, there's David Brooks' take on it:

"My first thought on the running mate question is that to balance his ticket, Barack Obama should pick a really old white general. Therefore, he should pick Dwight Eisenhower. John McCain, on the other hand, needs to pick someone younger than himself. Therefore, he also should pick Dwight Eisenhower."
