Reid Cautious on Gun Control; Killer's Weapon Purchase Documented
Sen. Reid aside, this country needs to deal with the culture of easy access to assault weapons and guns in general or these types of mass tragedies will become more common again. It has seemed that the assualt weapons ban had reduced these types of mass deaths to some extent. For some perspective on the US media coverage, Juan Cole notes that this type of event happens daily in Iraq.

Seung-Hui Cho bought his first gun, a 9mm handgun, on March 13 at a Roanoke, Va. gun store, the owner tells ABC News.
John Markell, the owner of Roanoke Firearms, said today that he had been interviewed by three agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms about Cho's purchase of a Glock 9 mm handgun.
"I feel terrible about this," Markell told ABC News at his store today, which is part gun shop, part pawn shop on the outskirts of Roanoke.
Markell said Cho's gun and a box of 50 bullets cost $571. He said Cho paid by credit card and left the store with the gun.

how life and death are treated so differently in the media.

BAGHDAD — Four large bombs exploded in mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least 157 people and wounding scores as violence climbed toward levels seen before the U.S.-Iraqi campaign to pacify the capital began two months ago.
In the deadliest of the attacks, a parked car bomb detonated in a crowd of workers at the Sadriyah market in central Baghdad, killing at least 112 people and wounding 115, said Raad Muhsin, an official at Al-Kindi Hospital where the victims were taken.
A police official confirmed the toll, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
Among the dead were several construction workers who had been rebuilding the mostly Shiite marketplace after a bombing destroyed many shops and killed 137 people there in February, the police official said.
The laborers typically finish work around 4 p.m. each day. One of those wounded, 28-year-old Salih Mustafa, said he was waiting for a minibus to head home when the blast went off at 4:05 p.m.
"I rushed with others to give a hand and help the victims," he said. "I saw three bodies in a wooden cart, and civilian cars were helping to transfer the victims. It was really a horrible scene."
The market is situated on a side street lined with shops and vendors selling produce, meat and other staples. It is also about 500 yards from a Sunni shrine.
The difference being of course, that buying enough explosives to fuel a car bomb is somewhat more difficult than walking into a Virginia gunstore and buying enough ammo to kill not 32 but actually 50 people.
Or, put another way: so it's OK, that the US is like Iraq?

It is called setting up a straw man and knocking him down.

Absurd. The point that was made is that the suffering in Iraq is on a scale that is unimaginable for us to comprehend. Those 178 and counting that were killed today alone in Baghdad were fathers and brothers, sisters and mothers, they were children and grandparents. They real people.
Not just a daily number.
The real problem with our gun laws is that an extremely mental ill person can legally purchase a weapon. Somehow that doesn't make any sense.
